What is this medication?

Ipratropium, Atrovent
Bronchodilator, Anticholinergic Agent

Ipratropium/Atrovent is officially indicated for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It is also used offlabel for acute asthma exacerbations. (may also be used for conditions not listed)

How does this medication work? 

Ipratropium/Atrovent inhibits acetylcholine at parasympathetic sites in the smooth muscle of the bronchioles resulting in bronchodilation. Nasal application reduces secretions of serous and seromucous glands.

How should I take this medication? 

Inhalers – 1-2 puffs four times per day with a maximum of 12 puffs per day nebulizer – 0.5mg every 6 to 8 hours
For severe asthma exacerbations these dosages may be exceeded.

How to Take: HFAs should be shaken first and a few priming puffs should be sprayed before first use or if the inhaler has not been used in 2-3 weeks.
Nebulizer solutions should be dilated with sterile saline to desired dosages if required

You Need to Avoid: Do not exceed recommended dosages as it may cause severe adverse reactions; do not get in eyes

What should I watch for while using this medication? 

Before starting Ipratropium/Atrovent make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, if you have narrow angle glaucoma, prostate hyperplasia, are pregnant or breastfeeding.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

How should I store this medication?

Keep out of reach of children. Store at 25°C (77°F); excursions permitted to 15° to 30°C (59° to 86°F). For optimal results, the canister should be at room temperature before use.

Contents Under Pressure: Do not puncture. Do not use or store near heat or open flame. Exposure to temperatures above 120°F may cause bursting. Never throw the inhaler into a fire or incinerator.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication?

Bronchitis, COPD exacerbation, sinusitis, headache. It may rarely cause paradoxical bronchospasm which may be misinterpreted as lack of effect. If symptoms worsen after using, discontinue the medication.
