Indicated for treatment of asthma.
How does this medication work?
Mometasone, Asmanex is a corticosteroid that exhibits anti-inflammatory activity which is important on controlling the pathogenesis of asthma. However, the exact mechanism of corticosteroids on asthma is unknown.
How should I take this medication?
Asmanex HFA: Metered-dose inhaler
Inhale 200mcg twice daily (maximum dose 800mcg daily)
Asmanex Twisthaler: Dry powder inhaler
Inhale 440mcg daily in divided doses or as once daily
How to Take Mometasone, Asmanex HFA: Shake well prior to each inhalation. Administer as 2 inhalations twice daily (morning and evening). Prime before first use and when the inhaler has not been used for >5 days by releasing 4 test sprays into the air, away from the face, shaking well before each spray. Rinse mouth with water (without swallowing) and spit after each use. Clean mouthpiece with a dry wipe after every 7 days of use.
How to Take Mometasone, Asmanex Twisthaler: When administered once daily, administer only in the evening. Exhale fully, then place mouthpiece in mouth holding it in a horizontal position and inhale quickly and deeply. Remove inhaler and hold breath for 10 seconds if possible. Do not breathe out through the inhaler. Rinse mouth after use.
What should I watch for while using this medication?
Before starting Mometasone, Asmanex make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, that it can have a negative effect on the HPA axis through adrenal suppression, can cause immunosuppression and rare cases of vasculitis have been reported.
What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.
How should I store this medication?
Keep out of reach of children. Store in a dry place at room temperature (15 °C to 30 °C). Use within 2 months after opening protective foil pouch.
What are the possible side effects of using this medication?
Oral candidiasis (rinse mouth with water without swallowing after each use to reduce risk), headache, fatigue, depression, muscle and joint pain, sinusitis, nasopharyngitis.
