What is this medication?
Triamcinolone (Topical), Triderm (US/CDN)/Kenalog/Oralone/Sila III/Trianex/Tritocin (US)/Aristocort C/Aristocort R(CDN)
Indicated for treatment of atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, vulvar dermatitis, psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis.
How does this medication work?
Triamcinolone, Triderm/Kenalog/Oralone/Sila III/Trianex/Tritocin/Aristocort C/Aristocort R is a topical corticosteroid that exhibits anti-inflammatory antipruritic, and vasoconstrictive properties by suppressing mediators of inflammation through induction of phospholipase A2 and arachidonic acid.
How should I take this medication?
Usual (Topical): Apply a thin layer once or twice daily to the affected areas.
Note: For areas affecting the face, groin, or other areas with skin folds, lower-potency preparations are generally recommended (unless limited to short-term use of 5 to 7 days and then switched to lower potency).
How to Take: Apply topically to the skin after bathing or after wet soaks. Occlusive dressing may be used if instructed by a health care professional.
What should I watch for while using this medication?
Triamcinolone, Triderm/Kenalog/Oralone/Sila III/Trianex/Tritocin/Aristocort C/Aristocort R cream and/or ointment should only be used externally. Do not cover with an occlusive dressing or use on weeping or exudative lesions. Discontinue if skin irritation or contact dermatitis occurs. Triamcinolone, Triderm/Kenalog/Oralone/Sila III/Trianex/Tritocin/Aristocort C/Aristocort R may cause hypercortisolism or suppression of the HPA axis, in younger children when used in high doses for prolonged periods of time. Prolonged use of triamcinolone can also result in fungal or bacterial superinfections.
What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.
How should I store this medication?
Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store in a cool dry place where the temperature stays below 25°C.
Do not store in the bathroom or near a sink. Do not leave it in the car or on window sills. Heat and dampness can destroy some medicines. Heat may cause cream to break down and lose a watery liquid.
What are the possible side effects of using this medication?
Acneiform eruption, dermatitis, folliculitis, skin atrophy and blister, Cushing syndrome, glycosuria, HPA-axis suppression, secondary infection, skin irritation, burning and pruritis.
