What is this medication?

Amoxicillin/Clavulanic Acid, Clavulin/Augmentin
Antibiotic, Penicillin; Beta-lactamase Inhibitor

Brand Name US: Augmentin
Canadian Equivalent: Clavulin

Amoxicillin/Clavulanic Acid, Clavulin/Augmentin is used on and off label for various infections depending on your common local bacterial strains for various infections and based on local resistance patterns.  Not all antibiotics work for all infections and efficacy can vary from area to area and vary with time.  It is common in North America for various upper respiratory infections, COPD exacerbations (off-label), diabetic foot infections (off-label), bite wound related infections (off-label), intra-abdominal infections (off-label), acute otitis media, pneumonia, etc.

How does this medication work?

Amoxicillin prevents bacteria from properly building cell wall eventually resulting in cell lysis (cell break down).  Beta-lactamase is a compound produced by bacteria that have developed resistance to penicillins that breaks down the beta-lactam ring preventing the antibiotic from having effect.  Clavulanic acid inhibits beta-lactamase thereby expanding amoxicillin’s spectrum of activity by increasing the number of bacteria strains that are sensitive to its effects.

How should I take this medication?

Average of 500-875mg every 8 to 12 hours but can vary depending on intended use.  Note that dosages are based on the amoxicillin component.  Not all products are interchangeable due to a specific amount of clavulanic acid being required despite amoxicillin dosage and the ratios may vary between them.

How to Take: Follow instructions provided by physician/pharmacy label, take consistently at same times each day with food unless otherwise directed, store at room temperature

You Need to Avoid: There is no direct interaction with alcohol however alcohol can reduce immune function which can be problematic when fighting an infection so alcohol is not normally recommended

What should I watch for while using this medication?

Before starting Amoxicillin/Clavulanic Acid, Clavulin/Augmentin make sure your physician is aware of any allergies (especially penicillin allergy) or medications you currently take, if you have liver disease, are pregnant or breastfeeding.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.
