What is this medication?
Indicated for the treatment of cystic hydatid disease of the liver, lung, and peritoneum, caused by the larval form of the dog tapeworm, Echinococcus granulosus.
How does this medication work?
Selective degeneration of cytoplasmic microtubules in intestinal and tegmental cells of intestinal helminths and larvae; depletes glycogen, impairs glucose uptake/choliesterase secretions; desecratory substances accumulate in cells.
How should I take this medication?
Take orally twice daily as directed. Generally, it is taken with food for systemic infections (increases bioavailability) and taken on an empty stomach for intraluminal infection with no systemic involvement.
What should I watch for while using this medication?
Before using make sure your physician is aware of your medical history including any medical conditions, past medical conditions, surgeries, allergies, medications you currently take, and if you are pregnant/breastfeeding before this was prescribed.
What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.
How should I store this medication?
Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed. Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.
What are the possible side effects of using this medication?
The frequency of side effects is not defined, but do include:
Headache, increased liver enzymes, increased intracranial pressure, vertigo, meningism, alopecia, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, fever.
