What is this medication?

Ketorolac (Ophthalmic), Acular/Acular LS/Acuvail
Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug, Ophthalmic

Indicated for treatment of postoperative ocular inflammation following cataract extraction, corneal refractive surgery, cataract surgery, seasonal allergic conjunctivitis.

How does this medication work?

Ketorolac, Acular/Acular LS/Acuvail is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that reduces swelling and redness (inflammation) bhy inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis by blocking cyclooxygenase 1 and 2.

How should I take this medication?

Usual (Ophthalmic): Instill 1 drop to the affected eye 4 times daily.

How to Instill Eye Drops:  For topical ophthalmic use only. Remove contact lenses prior to administration and wait 10 minutes before reinserting. May be used with other eye drops. If using more than 1 ophthalmic product, wait at least 5 minutes between application of each medication. Minimize contamination by not touching the eyelids or surrounding areas with the dropper tip; keep bottle tightly closed when not in use. Also, to minimize the risk of infection following surgery of both eyes, two separate bottles of eye drops (one for each eye) should be used; do not to use the same bottle for both eyes.

What should I watch for while using this medication?

Before starting Ketorolac, Acular/Acular LS/Acuvail make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, and activities you perform. Ketorolac, Acular/Acular LS/Acuvail when used in the eye can cause keratitis and over time may cause severe corneal thinning, erosion, perforation or ulceration resulting in a loss in vision. Ketorolac, Acular/Acular LS/Acuvail will also delay healing and should be used with caution in patients receiving concomitant topical steroid therapy.  Ketorolac, Acular/Acular LS/Acuvail should be used with caution in patients with diabetes, ocular disease, and rheumatoid arthritis. 

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of this medicine, apply it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule.

How should I store this medication?

Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Keep your eye drops in a cool place where the temperature stays below 25°C, and out of the light. 

Do not leave the top/lid off the bottle for any length of time to avoid contaminating the eye drops.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication?

Pruritis, application site irritation, redness.
