How does this medication work?
Abacavir, Ziagen is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor and interferes with RNA- and DNA-dependent polymerase resulting in inhibition of viral replication.
How should I take this medication?
Usual (Oral): 300mg twice daily or 600mg once daily in combination with other antiretroviral agents.
Note: Abacavir, in combination with lamivudine and either efavirenz, raltegravir, boosted atazanavir, or boosted darunavir, should not be used in patients with pretreatment HIV RNA ≥100,000 copies/mL.
How to Take Abacavir, Ziagen: Take with or without regard to food.
What should I watch for while using this medication?
Before starting Abacavir, Ziagen make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, and activities you perform. Abacavir, Ziagen has been associated with serious life-threatening hypersensitivity reactions in patients who carry the HLA-B*5701 allele, immune reconstitution syndrome, lactic acidosis and hepatomegaly. Abacavir, Ziagen should be used with caution in patients with risk for coronary heart disease and hepatic impairment.
What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.
How should I store this medication?
Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed. Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.
What are the possible side effects of using this medication?
Headache, fatigue, malaise, nausea, skin rash, abnormal dreams, sleep disorder, chills, migraine, depression, dizziness, anxiety, hypertriglyceridemia, diarrhea, abdominal pain, gastritis, gastrointestinal signs and symptoms, increased serum amylase, increased serum alanine aminotransferase, increased serum aspartate aminotransferase, drug-induced hypersensitivity, hypersensitivity reaction, musculoskeletal pain, ENT infection, viral respiratory tract infection, bronchitis, pneumonia, fever
